Senate Bill 78 (SB 78)

Senate Bill 78 (SB 78) prohibits cell phones in schools. Devices must be powered off and stored in lockers from the first bell to the final dismissal. Students bring personal devices at their own risk; the school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items. Parents needing to contact students during the school day should do so through Student Services.

Important Information:

Prohibited Devices:

  • Cell phones

  • Smart watches (including those with messaging or calling features)

  • Earbuds / wireless headphones / AirPods

  • Handheld gaming devices or systems

  • Tablets / iPads

  • Personal laptops

  • Meta glasses

  • E-readers

  • Other internet-connected personal devices used for messaging, calls, or data communication

Expectations:

  • If a student chooses to bring a personal electronic device to school, the device must be powered off and stored out of sight in the student’s locker before the start-of-school bell.

  • Students arriving late to school must turn in their personal electronic device(s) to Student Services upon arrival. Devices may be retrieved at the end of the school day.

  • Students are not permitted to access their lockers to use personal electronic devices during the school day, including during passing periods.

  • Personal electronic devices are prohibited during instructional time and may not be used unless authorized through an IEP, Section 504 Plan, Individual Health Plan, or other specific administrative approval.

Repercussions:

  • When a student is caught with a personal device during the prohibited hours, they will turn the device into an administrator, where it can be retrieved at the end of the school day.

  • Refusal to surrender a prohibited device when directed by a staff member constitutes insubordination and may result in suspension. This will influence a student’s eligibility for good standing.

  • Progressive discipline will result in required parent pickup and additional action(s).
