The purpose of the English Language Proficiency assessments is to determine a student's level of English proficiency. A Placement Test, administered upon a student's arrival in the United States, is used to determine which English Learner (EL) services are appropriate for the student. The annual assessment, administered in January and February, is used to determine the student's current level of English proficiency. The annual assessment is also used for accountability purposes.

College Entrance Exam (beginning Spring 2022)

Public Law 192-2018 replaces ISTEP+ Grade 10 assessments with a nationally recognized college entrance exam. The Indiana Department of Administration announced the selection of College Board as the vendor to fulfill this assessment requirement.

    PSAT/NMSQT

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized assessment administered by College Board and co-sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in the United States. The State of Indiana provides funds (as appropriated in HEA 1001 [2019]) to measure students’ college- and career-readiness, indicate student academic strengths and challenges, and provide additional support to students (I.C. 20-32-9-3). PSAT/NMSQT may be administered to students in grade 10 and/or grade 11 for this purpose.

    Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

Advanced Placement (AP) enables students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. AP Exams are offered by the College Board at the conclusion of each AP course. The State of Indiana provides funds to support student participation in AP Exams.
