Khan Academy

The School City of Hobart (SCOH) has been a proud Khan District since 2017. In 2023, Sal Khan personally invited Superintendent Dr. Buffington and Director of Secondary Curriculum Dr. Krieg to preview Khanmigo, an AI-powered tutor developed in partnership with ChatGPT. Designed to coach students through learning, problem-solving, and writing—not just provide answers—Khanmigo immediately impressed with its Socratic style, adaptability, and potential to support teachers.

Despite initial hesitation, SCOH teachers agreed to pilot Khanmigo during the final quarter of the school year. The results were exciting: students enjoyed the personalized support, and teachers appreciated how it helped with differentiation and lesson planning. As the pilot grew, Khan’s team collaborated closely with Hobart educators, using real-time feedback to improve the platform.

In the 2023–2024 school year, Khanmigo was rolled out district-wide for grades 3–12, with ongoing training and development. In 2024–2025, the new Writing Coach tool was introduced, helping students overcome writer’s block and enabling teachers to guide writing more effectively, much like a teaching assistant.

As usage grew, data showed increased student engagement, originality, and time on task. Principals even began using Khanmigo to support students after school in tough subjects like chemistry and geometry. Concerns about cheating faded as students learned to engage with AI for deeper understanding and problem-solving.

SCOH’s Khanmigo journey was so impactful it was featured on "60 Minutes", celebrating how AI can transform education when used responsibly. Teachers became trailblazers, students achieved more, and SCOH proudly helped shape the future of learning.
