JUAN MIGUEL MARCANO
Hobart High School Senior
Class of 2015
Miguel Marcano is an all around class act! He is an excellent student, skilled athlete and a genuinely kind and compassionate person. From the stories in the newspapers to the emails we receive here at our school system, Miguel is Someone You Should Know.
He is a year-round athlete participating in soccer, swimming and track. Though a star in all sports, he shines brightly in swimming. This year Miguel conquered a 30 year old diving record! The old record achieved in 1984 was 293.3, Miguel smashed it with a stunning 340.45! In years past, he has been impressive placing 13th in Sectionals as a Sophomore and last year claiming the 3rd place spot at Sectionals and 16th at Regionals. This year has by far been his best yet with a 1st place victory to become the Sectional Diving Champion. He now advances to Regionals where he hopes to qualify for State.
Along with competing he is a humble young man with a heart to help others. We recently received an email telling us of a moment they had witnessed at a meet where Miguel did an uncommon act:
"After a Chesterton diver failed at a dive, Miguel noticed he was upset and next thing I knew he was sitting with him. He helped motivate him to get over the fear of his next dive because if you fail 2 dives you are disqualified. So here's Miguel, a senior in the lead needing to prepare for his own final dive to become Sectional Champ, helping out a freshman from Chesterton whom he had never met. The little guy did not fail his next dive! It was really an amazing scene."
This is not something that is witnessed on a regular basis especially at that level in the competition, but Miguel has done a great job achieving and conquering many goals all the while doing what is most important, helping others. This is a small part of why Miguel is Someone You Should Know!Hobart's Marcano Shatters Old School Diving Mark! NWITimes-12/17/2014
Congratulations to Miguel! He recently signed to attend the University of Evansville! U of E is a NCAA DIV. 1 school where Miguel will be participating in their swim program. It consists of about 2,500 students and is located at the very southern tip of Indiana. Some very notable alumni came from U of E and I am sure Miguel will be another one! Best of luck toward your future as a Purple Ace!
As a Senior, Miguel shattered the 6 dive school record of 293.3 (a 30 year record) with a score of 340.45! That score also broke the pool record of 320 set by a 2x state runner up from Valparaiso! Miguel was a Conference Runner-up (449) and Sectional Champion (Hobart's first in 30 years) with a score of 456. He finished 9th at the Mishawaka Regional, one spot away from State Finals. He also earned Northwest Crossroads Conference All Academic team.
