U.S. ARMY BAND

On November 11th of 2002, The United States Army Band came to the Hobart High School. Some of the students were invited to play one song, "National Emblem", with them. These students were Karen, Ashley, Nadine, Amber, Chad, Rachel, Michelle, Ashley, Jason, and Josh.

CONCERT SEASON

The first two concerts of the year were very successful! In October, on the 22nd, the band played marching show music, Purdue Band Day music, and National Emblem. On December 17th, the band played Christmas songs, and both Jazz Band and Woodwind Choir performed. The Spring Concert will take place on March 25th where we will be selling Cookie Dough, Cheesecake, and Pretzels from our last fundraiser. Finally, on May 29th, we will have our Awards Concert. We hope to see you there!!

BAND CONTEST

This year's ISSMA Band Contest will take place on April 12th. In this contest, each band competes not with each other, but against itself. In this sense, contest is judged like the ISSMA Solo/Ensemble Contest. Each band will play three selections and will try for a Division I rating. The HHS Band will be playing "Over the Hill March" by Takeo Hoshiya, "Tocatta for Band" by Frank Erickson, and "Shenandoah" by Frank Ticheli. The band is going Group two this year and will hopefully do well. Good luck, Band!

ISSMA SOLO/ENSEMBLE CONTEST

On February 1st, the annual ISSMA Solo/Ensemble Contest took place. Those who prepared solos for this event were Karen on flute and piccolo, Ashley on flute and piccolo, Nadine on clarinet, Chad on clarinet, Rach on saxophone, Patrick on trombone, and a flute quartet consisting of Rachel, Stephanie, Marilynn, and Jackie. Karen, Ashley, Nadine, and Rach all performed group one solos, which enabled them to go to state when they all received 1st Division ratings. Everyone else who participated received a Division I rating as well.

At state on February 22nd, Karen earned a Division I rating on her flute and piccolo solos, Ashley earned a Division I on her flute solo and a II on her piccolo solo, Nadine earned a Division I on her clarinet solo, and Rachel earned a Division II on her saxophone solo. Great Job to everyone who attended!!

LIBRARIANS

All Librarians: Make sure you work at least one day a week!! You've done a great job so far!! Keep it up!! In addition, no band members are allowed to access the library without permission from either a Librarian or Ms. Trutwin. The Librarians have been working diligently to organize the Band Library, so please help them keep it organized!!

THE HHS BAND HANDBOOK

The Band Handbook discusses, in full, all policies, information, and expectations that are necessary to know in order to succeed in the band. The handbook contains information on maintaining as well as "stepping up" on your instrument. It is VERY IMPORTANT to read and understand all aspects of the HHS Band Handbook. If you have any questions, please ask Ms. Trutwin!!
