0117 - Passport to
Culture
Grades 9-12
Students study French, German and Spanish speaking countries including the
people, lifestyle, travel and tourism. This course is taught in English
and does NOT count towards foreign language credit. *Teacher availabilty
may limit course content to two languages being covered during some
quarters.

Grades 9-12
This beginning course introduces elementary speaking, listening, reading
and writing skills. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary and conversational
French.

Grades 9-12
French 3-4 expands the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills of
French 1-2. Emphasis is placed on real-life situations and culture.

0097 - French 5-6
French 5-6 continues the language skills of French 3-4. Emphasis is placed
on verb usage and the "survival skills" needed in the French
speaking world such as using a telephone, taking public transportation,
going to the post office, etc...

0098 - Honors French 7-8
This course introduces the use of college-level texts which are read,
analyzed and discussed in French. Fine points of grammar are developed and
reviewed. Emphasis on advanced reading, writing and speaking. An
illustrated short story is a required class project.

0099 - Honors French 9-10
French 9-10 continues the college-level text usage as in 7-8. Final review
is made in preparation for college placement exams. Class project is an
autobiography. The student should be ready for an independent study
approach.

0100 - German 1-2
Grades 9-12
Lessons are centered around conversations and narratives relating to
teenagers and their activities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
Students are encouraged to meet and host visiting German students who
spend three weeks in Hobart as part of an exchange program.

Grade 9-12
This class further develops the speaking listening and reading skills of
the German student. Activities include text, worksheets, tapes, videos,
computer software and the internet. Students are encouraged to host an
exchange student or participate as a traveler or committee member.

Continued work on skills learned in German 1-4. Emphasis placed on all
aspects of communications and a more in-depth study of culture is
presented.

0103 - Honors German 7-8
This course includes a comprehensive grammar review. Students read
college-level literature and write essays on a regular basis. Class
conversations are held in German.

0104 - Honors German 9-10
Students will be expected to study independently in this course while
they refine individual skills and concentrate on a particular area of
interest.

0105 - Spanish 1-2
Grades 9-12
Spanish 1-2 enables the students to acquire a useful Spanish background in
vocabulary. Study includes people, history, culture and geography.
Emphasis is on oral and written communication.

The student receives further training in oral and written communication.
Increased emphasis is placed upon listening and reading skills as well as
culture.

Emphasis is continued to be on all skills and culture. Knowledge of
Spanish literature, art and music is introduced and studied.

Constant use of Spanish in the classroom aides the student to improve
in all aspects of communication. A grammar workbook is required and
travel/study in a Spanish-speaking country is encouraged.

Increased study in situational vocabulary, impromptu conversation and
advanced written composition is emphasized. College level material is
used.
