Grade 9
This is the required English course for freshmen.  Work includes grammar, composition, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and the study of different types of literature.

Grade 9

This is the enriched course for freshmen.  Literature, grammar, and composition are covered in great detail.  A Shakespearean play, several short stories and a Dickens novel are among the pieces of literature studied.

Grade 10
This is the required English course for sophomores.  Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of writing skills through language structure and continual practice.  In literature, emphasis is on the various kinds of literature including non-fiction, short story and drama.

Students will be exposed to a more advanced approach to composition emphasizing unity, coherence, transitions, logic and mechanics.  The various genre of literature will be viewed in an analytical and critical manner.  Oral expression will also be utilized.

This course will present a sequential writing program by providing specific expository writing practices.  Two novels will be studied including a chronological study of the periods of American literature.

Teacher Recommendation
Honors students will study complex literature and employ higher levels of thinking.  Students will carefully analyze the philosophies and styles of writing from early America to the 20th Century.  Three classical novels will be examined from which major written and oral projects will be drawn.  The student will develop longer and more complicated papers as well as concentrate on improving vocabulary.

This is a COLLEGE LEVEL course in English composition and literature.  Students are required to take a national exam in May and may be able to attain college credit.

This course is designed for the student considering a technical school, IUN, apprenticeship, military, or direct entry into the work force.  Emphasis is placed on the practical applications of English.  Preparing business letters, resumes, application completion, and mock job interviews are a few of the activities included.  A term paper is required as is reading short stories, drama and a novel.

This is a COLLEGE BOUND course designed to acquaint the student with the literature and history of the writers of Great Britain from the Anglo-Saxon period to the Renaissance.  Works will include both poetry and drama.

Prerequisite - "C" in English 5
A laboratory course in writing designed to teach the student to express him/herself clearly and correctly.  A term paper is required.  Although most writing takes place in the classroom, additional time is required for research, word processing, and improving rough drafts.

018 - Creative Writing I

The student will explore writing an non-fiction article, a character sketch, radio and TV advertisements as well as poetry, children's literature, a short story and the first two chapters of a novel.
