Purpose:
Students will respond to literature, analyze literature, and develop written communication skills through letter writing to a specific audience (the teacher).

Materials:
a variety of texts (both fiction and nonfiction)
reader's response notebooks

A. Pre-Activity Discussion:
1) Mini-lesson on letter writing, review parts of a letter
2) Show students a sample reader's response entry either written by the teacher or a former student.
3) Practice writing a sample resonse as a class together from a book the class has read.

B. Activity Body:
1) Give students Sentence Leads for Reading Response Journals blackline masters and discuss.
2)Assign students a day of the week that their journal is due.
3) Develop a rubric together as a class regarding Reader's Response Journal expectations.
4)Once a week, during independent reading, students write a reader's response entry as a letter addressed to the teacher.
