Purpose:
Students will discern between fact and opinion.

Materials:
Newspapers
highlighters (2 colors)

A. Pre-Activity Discussion:
Discuss the difference between fact and opinion. Orally, have students give facts and opinions about the classroom.
|
B. Activity Body:
Have students write 5 facts and 5 opinions about themselves. Share the facts and opinions and discuss ways of determining how to tell the differences.
|
C. Close the Activity:
Give students a copy of the local paper and have them highlight sentences that are factual in one color and sentences that are opinions in the opposite color. Students can work in teams. Come together and discuss the best opinion and fact sentences.
